Australian Government Export Permit

International pet transport can be complicated, especially if you are travelling with your pet for the first time. The rules differ from country to country and are constantly changing. An experienced pet transport company can help make the process easy and stress-free.

One of the documents required while exporting your pet from Australia is the Australian Government Export Permit. This permit is issued to all pet dogs and cats travelling from Australia after the final veterinary health check.

Your pet transport agent will arrange for a pre-export appointment with the local Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) office before your pet’s travel date. The date and time for the appointment can be specified on your NOI form.

During the pre-export appointment, a certifying officer from DAFF will check your pet’s documentation to make sure your pet is ready and eligible for export. Your pet is usually not required to attend this appointment, and your pet travel agency can attend on your behalf. However, if your pet is travelling to a country that needs your pet to be identified by the certifying officer before export, you will have to bring your pet for the inspection.

DAFF charges a fee to prepare your pet’s health certificate and export permit. This is a time-based fee, and pet parents are charged based on how long the inspection takes. The approximate fees for inspections during office hours are outlined below:

Export permit charges $299
Assessment (NOI) $48
Document assessment and preparation $74
Inspection – non-vet $48

After the certifying officer is satisfied that your pet has been prepared in line with the importing country’s requirements and complies with Australia’s export requirements, your pet will be issued the export permit and the health certificate. Your pet must leave the country within 72 hours after the export permit is issued. If your pet does not travel as planned due to unforeseen circumstances, please contact the DAFF regional office that issued the export permit.
