Mighty and Merel

Melbourne to Amsterdam

Trip Overview

Owner: Merel Wesselink

Origin: Melbourne

Pet Name: Mighty

Destination: Amsterdam

Breed: Domestic Shorthair

“Petraveller was amazingly helpful and answered all my questions and concerns.”

Pet parent Merel recently moved back to her hometown in Amsterdam as she felt homesick. She used Petraveller to relocate her lovely Domestic Shorthair Mighty from Melbourne to Amsterdam. Merel talks about her pet’s temperament and explains why she employed Petraveller for Merel’s international pet relocation.

Merel adopted Mighty two years ago from a shelter as an adult cat; Mighty is eight years old now. Mighty is a sweet cat who loves to cuddle. Merel speaks about her cat with great affection. She says, “Mighty loves to roll around on the floor and enjoys watching seagulls flying past our building. She loves snoozing in the sun, and we’ll say hi each time we walk up to her.”

Talking about her pet’s temperament, Merel says, “Mighty is very shy and a scared cat but not violent. She’s the type to run and hide or freeze whenever she’s in a new environment or with new people. Mighty is traumatised from her previous, violent home. She rarely hisses, only if she feels cornered or startled. It took Mighty months to get used to us, and she is still a bit shy now and then. I feel so proud of what we’ve accomplished with her by being patient and showing her lots of love. Mighty responds to her name, and we’ve been able to teach her a few tricks like giving a high five.”

Merel cautions, “Mighty meows a lot when she’s in her crate. However, making the crate darker with a towel on top helps her calm down. She’ll most likely not eat or drink well throughout the trip. The best way to deal with Mighty is to leave her, keep her crate a bit dark and leave one side a bit open so that she can take a peek if she wants to and avoid loud, sudden noises or movements. She’ll get used to being in the crate and sleep at some point. This trip will be tough, but I know that it’ll benefit her in the long haul because she’s familiar with us, feels happy with us, and we feel happy having her.”

After residing in Melbourne for five years, Merel was returning to her hometown in Amsterdam, Netherlands. She says, “I’ve been feeling quite homesick, so we’re going back to see how it feels to be in the Netherlands again and see family and friends. Leaving Mighty behind was pretty much a no-no. We knew from the moment we adopted her that we’d move back to the Netherlands within the next few years. It feels unethical to put her back in a shelter just because it’s too much trouble to bring her. We are super attached to Mighty, and she is to us. She’s grown a lot in the past two years, and I wouldn’t want to put a stop to that.”

Merel decided to hand over the international pet relocation to an experienced pet travel company so Mighty can have a smooth and safe pet travel experience. Merel got in touch with Petraveller to manage Mighty’s journey from Melbourne to Amsterdam. Merel says, “Petraveller’s reviews were great and they got back to me first when we reached out for a quote. I spoke to Petraveller over the phone, and they were amazingly helpful and answered all my questions and concerns.”

We are glad to say that Mighty had an incredible journey and landed safely in Amsterdam. Thank you, Merel, for trusting Petraveller to relocate sweet Mighty. We hope you have a wonderful time with your family and Mighty in beautiful Netherlands.
