Frequently asked questions

Does my pet need a health certificate to travel to Italy?

Pets travelling to Italy from non-EU countries need a health certificate issued by an authorised vet in the country of origin. The health certificate is an important document and must contain identification features of your pet and the microchip details. The health certificate must include the following information: Proof of rabies vaccination, description of the pet and contact details of the pet owner.

Is my pet on the banned breeds list in Italy?

Italy revoked the dangerous dog legislation and introduced a law that puts the responsibility of the dog on the owner. The pet parent must ensure the dog is trained and not a threat to society. Currently, Italy does not ban any dog breeds from entering the country. The city of Venice, however, prohibits the entry of Rottweilers and Doberman Pinschers.

Local Pet Requirements

Venice is dog-friendly; however, pet parents must follow certain rules to live with a dog in Venice. Pet dogs must always be on a lead in public places except in a designated lead-free dog area. All pet dogs must be vaccinated against rabies and other canine diseases and have a current rabies vaccination certificate.

Though pet dogs are not allowed in all restaurants, many establishments with outdoor seating areas allow dogs. Remember to be mindful of other people and their property and make sure your dog is always under control.
